Call for Mentors
Currently, we’re looking for PhD students and college graduates working in STEM, Data, or AI fields, to participate as mentors in our STEAM in AI Mentoring Program.
This initiative is aimed at high school students, interested in a career in one of these areas, allowing them to develop an original project of their choice while receiving mentoring.
The main goal is for these young people to gain essential knowledge and skills through experience. We also want to offer students an opportunity to receive insight from their mentors about the field they’re interested in pursuing so that they can make informed decisions about their education and career.
The program consists of a minimum of 10 one-hour online sessions 1:1. Ideally, meetings should take place every 3/4 weeks so that the mentees can keep on track as they develop their project; however, we give students and mentors the freedom to arrange the meetings according to their schedules.
It’s easy to understand the obvious advantages of a mentoring experience for the mentees. Nevertheless, assuming a mentor’s role also comes with various perks.
What benefits can you expect to gain as a mentor in this program?
First and foremost, this is a paid opportunity. While some of our mentors choose to participate in the program pro-bono, as you’ll see on our website, this is entirely their choice.
Another significant benefit to mentoring others is the sense of fulfillment and personal satisfaction you get from helping people during such a crucial part of their journey.
In particular, given that you’ll be mentoring high school students wishing to pursue a career in your field, it can be extraordinarily rewarding to know you personally contributed to the success of the future generation of professionals in your area.
Our foundation has always been committed to breaking the barriers of entry into STEAM, especially for girls, people of color, and economically disadvantaged individuals.
As such, we hope you’ll find even more joy and pride in knowing that you’re contributing to a project that is actively helping to create a more diverse and inclusive workforce for the future.
No matter whom you end up mentoring, they will certainly appreciate the guidance you can provide, both in relation to their project and also other general matters regarding college, career options, and the job market.
As a mentor, you’ll be able to support and motivate students while sharing your knowledge and experience. Nevertheless, at the same time, you’ll be able to reinforce your knowledge and improve your skills.
Primarily, you’ll strengthen your listening and communication skills, develop your capacity to lead and work on interpersonal skills, such as empathy and patience. No doubt, these will be extremely valuable to you as a professional, no matter what level in your education or career you’re in, and can be an asset in your resume.
Finally, we hope that this will be a chance for both mentors and mentees to be exposed to new perspectives so that they can become more aware and empathetic toward people from different backgrounds.
